Ruck & Roll – Cycling in support of Wheelchair Rugby Association (Singapore)

Team Solitaire took to the streets on 11 December 2020 in an effort to raise S$50,000 for Wheelchair Rugby Association (Singapore) – WRAS.

Led by partners, Desmond Ong and Nichol Yeo and joined by 20 clients and friends, the group rolled out at 3am from East Coast Park. The air was cool and crsip and made for a pleasant ride to their first pitstop at West Coast Park. Day broke as they rode into Tuas and Benoi Road. A well-deserved break came in the form of breakfast at Poison Ivy bistro located within Bollywood Veggies.

Feeling recharged, the group continued riding north into Woodlands and Yishun. Despite the scorching heat, they pushed on towards Punggol and Pasir Ris. At the final pitstop of Changi Beach Park, they were met with Guest of Honour, Mr Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and Second Minister for Law. He gamely joined everyone in riding the homestretch to Central Thai at East Coast Park.

Team Solitaire and Minister were joined by members of WRAS close to the finishing line and was met with rapturous delight by the crowd. Fatigue and aching muscles aside, the air was charged with adrenaline – completing a round-island ride of 160 km in 10 hours was no small feat!

President of WRAS, Mr Danial Bawthan said “WRAS is a beacon of hope. It embodies our hope that wheelchair rugby will become a mainstream sport, for all people regardless of ability, and a desire to integrate and contribute to our community.”

Mr Nichol Yeo added “It has been a hard year; we were all worried about the pandemic and how that would affect us. This is a great opportunity to cast those worries aside, rally the team and help support a good cause. WRAS is made up of a group of determined and committed individuals and the core values of the association spoke to us; that of being inclusive – something we can all learn to do more of.”

Guest of Honour, Minister Edwin Tong was heartened by the overwhelming care and support shown especially in a challenging year like this one. Ruck and Roll concluded on a high with a cheque presentation of S$50,000 to WRAS, raised through contributions by clients and friends of Solitaire. Thank you to all. We could not have done this without your big heart.
